Is Your Hoshizaki Ice Machine Beeping?

Hoshizaki-commercial-ice-machines-Kansas-City

Hoshizaki has long been one of the most trusted and reliable names in commercial ice equipment and at Capital Equipment, we’ve rented, sold, leased and serviced hundreds of their ice machines over the years. Founded in 1947 in Japan and expanding to the United States in 1981, Hoshizaki is built for the busiest kitchens, hospitals, schools, and businesses that rely on always having quality ice in their bins when they need it. But just like any other commercial equipment, ice machines need routine service and maintenance otherwise they end up either not working correctly or not producing ice at all.

Hoshizaki Ice Machine Error Codes, Service, and Repair in Kansas City

With each ice machine manufacturer having their own alert system/error code style, Hoshizaki’s is someone unique in that the error codes can be heard through a series of beeping. The number of error code beeps can help pinpoint the issue so that factory trained technicians like those at Capital Equipment can diagnose and correct the issue(s)

One Beep-high temperature safety warning

As a safety precaution, Hoshizaki ice machines has a built in function that helps protect the equipment from being damaged due to high heat temperatures. This could be caused by ambient air temperature heating the water too high before it enters into the ice machine.

Two Beeps-long harvest cycle

When ice is ejected from the mold, it’s called a harvest cycle and Hoshizaki ice machines monitor that amount of times it takes to harvest. If the machine senses multiple harvest cycles taking 20 minutes or more, you will get this 2 beep alert.

Three Beeps-long freeze cycle

An ice machine’s free cycle begins after the ice molds have bee filled with water. A long freeze cycle alert could mean that the float switch is closed, the compressor is weak, or the water inlet valve is open or leaking.

Four or Five Beeps-circuit issues on mechanical bin sensor

This alert is mostly for older Hoshizaki models that have a mechanical bin control. 4 beeps signal a short circuit and 5 beeps represent an open circuit on the bin control.

Six or Seven Beeps- incorrect voltage supply

Having the correct voltage is crucial to Hoshizaki ice machines to operate correctly. 6 beeps signal that the voltage is too low whereas 7 beeps indicate that the voltage is too high. Either scenario can be due to a wiring problem or a voltage surge.

Eight Beeps-de-energized gear motor relay

8 beeps represent that the gear motor relay is de-energize which can result in the ice machine to shut down the compressor which essentials halts ice production. This can sometimes be fixed by simply turning the ice machine on and off which will manually reset the error code.

Nine Beeps-bin control check

9 beeps signals that the ice bin is nearly full which automatically shuts the ice machine’s ice production down. This error code can be reset by turning the machine on and off again but make sure to empty some of the ice out of of the bin otherwise you will likely get the same error code again.

Common Questions About Ice Machines

Kansas-City-commercial-ice-machines-makers-KCMO-KC-MO-KS

commercial-ice-makers-machines-Kansas-City-Overland-Park

Not everyone is an ice machine experts and at Capital Equipment, we get it, which is why we put together some of the most common questions we get from our customers about ice and ice equipment.

Commercial Ice Machines in Kansas City, Overland Park, and Shawnee, KS

For years, Capital Equipment has been the greater Kansas City area’s commercial ice machine experts and our goal is and always has been to help educate our customers to make sure that they have the right ice equipment for their businesses.

commercial-ice-machines-ice-makers-KC-KCMO-Kansas-City

What are the best commercial ice machines?

There are quite literally hundreds of ice machine manufacturers with new ones popping up each year but the problem is that many of them aren’t built for the long haul and when you have an obscure brand, replacement parts can be hard to come by. At Capital Equipment, we recommend well known and well established commercial ice machine brands that have a proven history of being reliable and for making the highest quality ice. Capital Equipment recommends Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Manitowoc, and Ice-O-Matic ice machines as they have proved to be durable and reliable for years for all types of businesses.

How often should ice machines be cleaned and sanitized?

commercial-ice-machine-cleaning-service-repair-Kansas-City

Many commercial ice machine manufacturers have different recommendations but overall a good rule of thumb would be about every 3 months. However, larger ice machines that see more individuals using them and thousands of pounds of ice produced may need to be cleaned more frequently. Particularly with COVID-19 continuing to spread, cleaning and sanitizing commercial ice machines should be much more frequently especially if a large number of people are coming in contact with the equipment. Also, when a boil order is issued for the city where your business is located it’s generally a good idea to clean and sanitize your commercial ice machines as well as change the water filter.

How often should the water filter be changed on a commercial ice machine?

ice-machine-water-filter-filters

As stated above, it is highly recommended that water filters be changed immediately if a boil order has been issued in your area but under normal circumstances most commercial ice machine manufacturers recommend every six months but equipment that is in heavily use may require more frequent changeouts. It’s best to make sure that water filters are changed out on a predetermined schedule to ensure quality, clean ice otherwise it may begin to taste funny which is not good for any business.

A Brief History Of Ice Machines

ice-machine-service-repair-cleaning-maintenance

commercial-ice-machine-dealer-rental-Kansas-City-MO

While ice makers and commercial ice machines may seem more like a modern convenience because they are common in nearly every home, office, restaurant and business today, they have actually been around for quite a while. Of course there have been huge leaps in technology to help produce cleaner and higher quality ice more quickly at the push of a button but the principle mechanics for ice makers remains pretty much the same as when they were invented. Here’s a quick history on the origin of the ice machines as we know them today.

Commercial Ice Machines in Kansas City, Atchison, and Overland Park, KS

commercial-ice-machine-service-repairs

The use of ice itself by humans has been around since the beginning of time but was first recorded as far back as 400 BC when ancient Egyptians would use clay pots filled with water to be left out overnight in the cold to freeze and then stored underground to keep it preserved. In other parts of the world, ice could be harvested from frozen lakes and rivers as any kid that has seen the movie Frozen can tell you. But it wasn’t until the 1840’s when a New England man named Fredric Tudor began to not only harvest ice on a mass scale but also found ways to effectively ship it without it melting which, as you might expect, created a huge demand for ice on a global scale. Refrigeration had already been invented in 1834 by Jacob Perkins who was the first to patent a refrigerator as we know them today using ether in a vapor compression cycle. But an American doctor named John Gorrie was the first to truly produce a refrigerator or cooling device as we know them today in 1844 in an effort to help keep his patients cool from fevers but he opted to introduce it to public by offering chilled wine at a Bastille Day festival offering cold beverages to festival goers on a hot July day.  While the ether powered refrigerator invented by Gorrie and Perkins would later be found to be a danger especially when ether would leak out, two inventors named Charles Franklin Kettering and Thomas Midgely, Jr. discovered Freon in 1928 which would still use Gorrie’s principle of condensing, throttling, and evaporating air but in a much safer way. Many more technological advancements would be made after the foundation for refrigeration and ice making were laid and you’d be hard pressed to not go anywhere without seeing coolers, freezers, or ice machines using the same methods and principles in the modern world today.
